History & Heritage

North Yorkshire is steeped in history and is home to a wide range of fascinating heritage sites, many of which are within easy reach of North Stainley. This section gives you just a taste of what’s available from ruined abbeys to stately homes, great castles, an 11th century cathedral and some intriguing museums.

The Great Outdoors

There are splendid walks right from your doorstep in North Stainley but, if you venture a little further afield, you have the whole of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to go at. If you don’t feel like devising your own walk or drive, many of the websites in this section offer suggestions for places to visit and routes to walk.

Gardens & Nature

This section features our own local nature reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) - High Batts - as well a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) garden. The privately-owned Himalayan Garden is a sight not to be missed in spring and autumn and Thorp Perrow Arboretum is well worth more than one visit.

Towns & Villages

Our local city, Ripon offers plenty to be enjoyed including museums and the cathedral, while nearby Harrogate is famous for Betty’s Tea Rooms, excellent shopping opportunities and as an historic spa town. Masham, just five miles north of the village, is a thriving market town where there always seems to be something good going on.

Kids, Fun & Thrills

School holidays? A long weekend? Kids getting fractious? Problem solved! This section offers a range of accessible outdoor activities to keep them occupied, happy, away from their ‘devices’. If we’re honest, there’s also a lot to bring out the inner big kid in us grown-ups too!

Pubs, Breweries, Restaurants, Cinema, Golf and Places to Stay

OK, this is bit of a catch-all category but we thought you’d want to know about our famous local breweries or pick up suggestions for somewhere for an informal meal or a quiet drink with friends. We’ve also included our village B&B, the nearest golf club and a great little cinema just down the road.
